Electric Pencil Sharpeners?

Any chance that anyone might have a spare electric pencil sharpener that we could borrow for our classroom???? Ours have both broken and the manual one frequently doesn't work as well.  Thanks in advance if you can help us out with this!

ASSIGNMENT

WHAT I DID ON MY TWO SNOW DAYS OFF FROM SCHOOL THIS WEEK:

Write paragraph about what you did this week on your days off during the blizzard! Include a title, an intro sentence, at least 8 to 10 detail sentences, and a closing sentence. Feel free to add a picture (if you have one) or some clip art! We will be sharing our stories together in class tomorrow.

Valentine's Day

We will have a Valentine's Day celebration on Friday, February 13th.
The students WILL be exchanging valentines.
I sent home a class list with names today reminding them that handing out valentines to the class is completely optional.  However, if they do chose to pass them out, they must do one for ALL of the students in our class.

I am in the process of trying to come up with a craft for the class to make on that day as well!

Hope you all stayed warm and safe in all of that snow!  And more to come!!!

Another change of date...

Ugh!  This snow!  So... because of it, let's change the due date for books until this coming Monday!
I will also change the due date for the facts, report, and project to Monday, March 2nd!

Google Drive Info:

***Mr. Walsh has the students' Google Drives up and running!  This is a great tool as they can login and access their Docs from any device anywhere!  They can edit and share their work, stories, and reports on the Drive from now on, and share it with me (via lavertyj@grafton.k12.ma.us). ***

Nonfiction Book Report Info

A hard copy of the packet was sent home with students today...

Dates to remember:
Books should be shown to me by Monday, January 26th.
Fact pages or index cards, report, AND one of the following: poster or project are due on Friday, February 27th.
Final Reports should be shared on the Google Drive with me and saved as Nonfiction/Topic (with the actual topic written here as opposed to the word).  Students have Google accounts that were set up in Computer class so they should all know how to do this.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Student Assignment:
Once you have decided on your topic, please post it in a comment below for us to see.  BE SURE TO SIGN YOUR NAME WITH YOUR TOPIC.

Example:  My nonfiction topic is penguins.

Next week's updates....

Instead of spelling next week, students will be writing or typing their final copies of their "Baby Sitting an Elephant" story.  They should be doing even more revising and editing as they work on these throughout the week!  Final copies are due on Friday but can certainly be turned in earlier.  Some of the students have asked if they can make pictures or collages with clip art to accompany their stories which is completely fine but OPTIONAL!!!

Half day for students on Friday 1/16 and no school on Monday 1/19

We are in need of hand soap, wipes, and tissues for our classroom.  If anyone would be willing to donate any of these items we would greatly appreciate it!  With all that's going around, we are trying hard to keep our room clean and germ free so we can all stay healthy!

Thanks and have a great weekend!

Welcome Back!!

Welcome Back and Happy 2015!
A few updates....

Some dates to keep in mind for January:
Half Day for Students on Friday, January 16th
Martin Luther King Jr Day - no school on Monday, January 19th

As the weather (although off and and on lately!!) continues to get colder, please send your child to school with a coat.  Many of the students are coming in with very light weight hoodies rather than an actual warm coat.  We want them to be able to go out and enjoy recess and also not get sick!

Curriculum Update:

Math:
We are continuing to work on long division using the area model and partial quotients.  Students will be able to choose the method that they feel is best for them when we complete the unit.

Reading:
Our next unit will focus on nonfiction text.  We will be using a variety of materials to identify the text features and structure of this genre.

Language Arts:
Students are working on rough drafts of a creative writing assignment and working to incorporate all of the "Be a Better Writer" strategies that we have been working on in class.
Prompt:  "You are finally old enough to baby-sit, and your first job is this afternoon!  You will be spending the entire afternoon with a one year old.  When you open the door you realize that instead of watching a one year old child, you will be watching a one year old elephant!  Write a story about spending your afternoon with a baby elephant."
We will be finishing rough drafts this week in class and as part of next week's homework, students will be typing or writing final copies at home.
I'm looking forward to reading all of their final drafts of their stories!

Social Studies:
We are wrapping up the Southeast region with a fun project consisting of making a "license plate" to represent the state of their choice from that region.  They are researching information about the state and then putting facts and pictures on the the license plate to display the information to present to the class.

Science:
Students will be learning about energy - potential and kinetic.   A fun activity with toy cars will help them to understand and recognize the difference between the two...

As always, any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me!
